Gakami Mustard Seed Foundation (G‑MSF) is a community-focused organisation working to empower people, protect the environment and create practical opportunities for sustainable development across Kenya.
Guided by the belief that meaningful change begins with small, purposeful actions, the Foundation brings together communities, institutions, young people, women, volunteers and partners to build safer, healthier and more resilient communities.
**Small Seeds. Lasting Impact.**
## Environmental Conservation and Tree Planting
Environmental restoration is at the heart of G‑MSF’s work. The Foundation supports afforestation, climate-change mitigation, community tree nurseries and practical environmental awareness initiatives.
Its tree-growing work includes community and school-based planting activities, indigenous and fruit-tree planting, and partnerships that help communities raise seedlings suited to local climatic conditions. Through its projects, G‑MSF has supported tree planting in areas including Loitokitok in Kajiado County and Kangema in Murang’a County.
In Loitokitok, the Foundation planted 12,500 trees in Olkiloriti, including fruit trees such as orange, mango and lemon, alongside assorted tree species. In Kangema, it has supported the planting of more than 100,000 trees since 2020, promoting environmental restoration while creating benefits for families and future generations.
G‑MSF is also advancing the Greening Police Stations initiative, working with partners to support tree planting in police stations across the country. The initiative supports Kenya’s wider tree-growing and landscape-restoration agenda while creating greener, more welcoming public spaces.
## Training, Education and Skills Development
G‑MSF believes that education and practical skills are powerful tools for reducing poverty, building confidence and creating pathways to independence.
The Foundation supports training and education opportunities for young people and community members through scholarship support, mentorship, capacity development and market-relevant skills training. Its training programmes include areas such as:
* Digital marketing
* Computer packages
* Video and content creation
* Cybercrime awareness
* Smartphone repair
* Caregiving
* Driving
* Barbering and hairdressing
* Pastry and bakery
* Nail technology
By connecting learners with practical skills, G‑MSF helps young people and women prepare for employment, entrepreneurship and meaningful participation in the digital and creative economy.
## Women Empowerment, Peace and Community Safety
G‑MSF uses sport, dialogue and community participation to promote peace, social cohesion and the empowerment of women and young people.
Through women’s football tournaments and peace-building activities, the Foundation creates safe spaces where communities can come together, celebrate talent and speak out against violence, crime, drug abuse and conflict. These engagements strengthen the relationship between communities and security agencies while encouraging teamwork, discipline, mental well-being and peaceful coexistence.
The Nairobi Women Peace Tournament is one example of this commitment. The tournament brings together women, youth, community leaders, security agencies, partners and supporters around a shared goal: using sport as a vehicle for peace, unity and safer communities.
For G‑MSF, the tournament is more than football. It is a platform for community policing, women’s empowerment, youth engagement and lasting social change.
## Clean Water, Sanitation and Healthier Communities
Access to clean water and sanitation remains essential to community well-being. G‑MSF supports initiatives that improve water access, sanitation and hygiene, especially for vulnerable communities and schools.
The Foundation’s work includes support for community infrastructure, school improvement and partnerships that strengthen access to safe water. In Olkiloriti, its engagement includes support around rehabilitation of Olkiloriti Primary School, where water access and improved learning facilities are central to creating a healthier environment for learners and the wider community.
## Sustainable Livelihoods and Community Empowerment
G‑MSF works with communities to address the root causes of poverty through practical, sustainable initiatives. Its approach promotes livelihood opportunities, community participation and long-term resilience.
By supporting skills development, environmental projects, women and youth empowerment, agriculture-related activities and humanitarian assistance, the Foundation helps households build stronger foundations for the future.
